Pinoy riders make history, reach highest motorable peak in Himalayas

A Filipino riding group made history this week by becoming the first Filipino riding group to reach the "highest motorable peak" in the Himalayas.

Himalayan Adventure Team Pinas on Tuesday capped off an eight-day journey through what the National Geographic describes as some of the most "dangerous roads in the world" by planting a Philippine flag 18,380 feet above sea level

The team rode to the top at below 0 temperature under heavy snow after cruising through New Delhi and Agra in India and ascended to the Himalayan peak via Khardung La mountain pass.

"We are rolling now. We were able to follow our itinerary religiously. And now to a more challenging journey via Rohtang Pass," team member Jimmy D.L. Barinaga said in a post on Facebook.

According to the team, their members prepared for the brutal climb by undergoing almost a year of off-road riding training, basic first aid, and survival techniques.

The team hopes their journey will inspire other Filipino riders to follow suit and "make their own journey to the road less traveled."

The team is composed of Barinaga, Ryan Agoncillo, Raul Ona, Dian Dayag, Bong Diaz, Omar Sebastian, and Kanan Sreedevi, the sole Indian. —Rie Takumi/KBK, GMA News
