Pinoy bands to pay tribute to Chris Cornell in Dubai concert

Filipino musicians in the United Arab Emirates who idolize the late Chris Cornell or who are fans of his band Soundgarden and Audioslave will meet on Friday, June 30, for a one-night tribute concert.

The event, dubbed Spoonman after one of Soundgarden's hits, "was organized to pay tribute to Chris Cornell's innovation and remarkable contribution to grunge music," shared Terence Prado, the event's main organizer, via email.

Prado added, "Soundgarden, which was formed by Chris Cornell, became an example to all MakinaWorks’ bands in promoting authenticity in music."

MakinaWorks is the music community Prado started with a friend in July 2016, would also stage another musical event in the coming days.

"The sudden loss of a great rock icon was a big shock to the international music scene. MakinaWorks as a music community respects and values grunge musicians who greatly influenced the 90s music generation," said the 36-year-old Prado.

Set to perform in Rocky's Cafe in Dubai are Contrapelo, Timeo, Primrose, Twist For Good, Curious Juan, Escalera, Sampalataia, Kaizen Rally, Underrated, Thirdparty, and Tres Siglo.

Like Prado, who is a relationship manager at Dunia Finance, members of the performing bands are OFWs.

"We don't have any selection process," Prado said. "What we have is a group chat where bands that have played with us are present. We post details of the upcoming event and asked who wants to play." —KBK, GMA News
