AMID NOKOR THREAT

DFA places Guam, Northern Mariana Islands under Alert Level 1

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) has placed Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands under Alert Level 1 amid North Korea's nuclear missile threat.

Under Alert Level 1 (precautionary phase), Filipinos in Guam, Saipan, Tinian and Rota are urged to be aware of unfolding events and to continue monitoring reports from reliable media outlets and official advisories.

The DFA raised the alert level in Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands based on the recommendation of the Philippine Consulate General in Guam.

In response to US President Donald Trump's threat of "fire and fury," North Korea has pledged to have plans ready in a matter of days to launch an "enveloping fire" of missiles towards Guam, a US territory.

The island houses two large US military bases and is home to more than 6,000 US military personnel.

There are over 42,000 Filipinos in Guam.

Vigilance encouraged

Consul General Marciano de Borja said raising of the alert level "is not intended to cause undue alarm or panic."

"This is simply to encourage our citizens to be vigilant and to be prepared should any critical incident arise," he added.

The Consulate encouraged Filipinos in Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands to stay in touch with their families and friends "so they know how to contact you."

"All Filipinos are reminded to be ready to respond to any critical incident by having their passports and other documents readily on hand and to prepare a grab bag with essential supplies, including food and water," De Borja said.

The Consulate has readied one of its newly built houses in Tamuning Village as temporary shelter in case North Korea makes good on its threat.

A report on "24 Oras" said supplies like duct tape, water, portable stove and fuel have already been delivered to the shelter's basement.

The duct tape will be used to cover small openings in windows to prevent radioactive material from entering the premises. —KBK, GMA News
