New OFW ID card features Duterte photo

The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) has started issuing the OFW ID card or the iDOLE, the integrated ID that OFWs can use for easy transactions with government and private agencies concerning their overseas employment.

An example of the ID was posted on the Facebook page of Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO) Assistant Secretary Mocha Uson.

Though generally welcomed by OFWs, some questioned why President Rodrigo Duterte's picture was shown prominently on the ID.

"Ung mukha ng owner black and white, ung mukha ni PRRD colored, Ung mukha ng owner maliit  Ung mukha ni PRRD mas malaki," said Jorwin Villanueva Carmona of Saudi Arabia, reacting to Uson's post.

"Ayaw ng pangulo ng ganyan epal style ok na ung kamaong du30," said Alfred Pili.

Sought for comment, presidential spokesperson Harry Roque Jr. said he doesn't think Duterte was aware that his photo was on the OFW ID.

"Hindi ba pati ang mga pictures niya sa mga [government] offices pinapalitan niya ng mga heroes? I don't think he knew about this," he said.

Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello said the distribution, which started last week, is only the first phase of implementation and will cater first to vacationing OFWs "until the system is ready for all OFWs."

Vacationing OFWs are required to log in their BM Online accounts to apply for the ID cards, which they can use to avail of travel tax and terminal fee exemptions. —with Trisha Macas/KBK, GMA News
