Food poisoning downs 48 students in Iloilo: report

MANILA, Philippines — At least 48 Grade IV students fell ill on Thursday apparently of food poiosoning after taking part in the school's feeding program, a radio report said on Thursday. Visayas-based Bombo Radyo said the students of Igtubli Elementary School in Igtubli village of Tubungan town in Iloilo province fell ill after eating vegetables during their feeding program. The children were brought to the Guimbal District Hospital and other facilities nearby. Sketchy initial reports showed the pupils fell ill after eating vegetables during their feeding program in the morning. Teacher Dionita Echalar was quoted by the report as saying the pupils started feeling dizzy and complaining of stomachaches five minutes after the feeding program. Echalar said the students were served munggo, bananas, malunggay, sardines and rice during the feeding program. The report said authorities were looking into the possibility that the sardines bought on Wednesday from Tubungan may have been spoiled. Despite the confusion resulting from the poisoning, one young boy named Pamunan, said the vegetables he ate "tasted like soap."
