FBI to help investigate La Union shabu lab mess

MANILA, Philippines — The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) will step into the mess involving a P1-trillion methamphetamine hydrochloride (shabu) laboratory discovered earlier this month in La Union province. Radio dzRH reported Thursday afternoon that the FBI will help local authorities uncover the international connections of the operators of the shabu laboratory. Initial information gathered by the Philippine National Police (PNP) indicated a Chinese drug syndicate was behind the laboratory, which was operating at a remote village of Binmotobot in Naguilian town. Operatives of the La Union police and the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency.(PDEA) sized eight truckloads of equipment and chemicals that were estimated to produce 180 metric tons of the banned drug. PNP chief Dir. Gen. Avelino Razon Jr. already ordered a full investigation into the mess after a decorated police officer was dragged into the mess. Supt. Dionicio Borromeo, police chief of Dagupan City in nearby Pangasinan province, was relieved of his post after the clandestine factory’s caretaker identified as Dante Palaganas implicated him in the mess. Borromeo has denied involvement in the drug laboratory and claimed it was he who asked Razon to relieve him from his post. Borromeo was brought to the Philippine National Police Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (PNP-CIDG) headquarters in Camp Crame to undergo investigation. Police in the Ilocos region had expanded their investigation into the drug laboratory, looking into the possible involvement of local officials as protectors of the facility. A statement from the Ilocos regional police office on Wednesday said a task force looking into the drug mess was also investigating three more police officers linked to an illegal drugs syndicate. - GMANews.TV
