Typhoon Emong's death toll rises to 55


MANILA, Philippines — The death toll from Typhoon "Emong" rose further to 55 as of Wednesday night, the National Disaster Coordinating Council said Thursday. In a report dated 6 p.m. Wednesday but posted on its website (www.ndcc.gov.ph) Thursday afternoon, the NDCC said most of the fatalities were from Pangasinan and Ifugao. NDCC figures showed 27 fatalities were from Pangasinan, 17 from Ifugao, three each from La Union and Nueva Vizcaya, two from Cagayan, and one each from Isabela, Bataan and Zambales. At least 53 were injured, including 28 from Pangasinan, 16 from Ifugao, six from La Union, and three from Isabela. On the other hand, 12 remained missing, including four each from Isabela and Cagayan, three from Pangasinan, and one from Nueva Vizcaya. The NDCC said at least 84,978 families or 412,468 people from 406 villages in 55 towns and six cities in 11 provinces were affected. At least 16,073 houses were destroyed while 24,136 were damaged. Damage to property was estimated at P945.341 million, including 682.077 million in damage to agriculture and P263.263 million to infrastructure. Power interruptions are still being experienced in Bauang and Aringay in La union; and Anda, Agno, Bani, Bolinao, Burgos, Infanta, Alaminos and Mabini in Pangasinan. Cell phone communication lines remained unstable in Anda, Bani, Agno, Bolinao, Burgos, Infanta and Mabini in Pangasinan. Emong, the 5th tropical cyclone to enter the country this year, slammed into Pangasinan on May 7 from the South China Sea with 150 kph maximum center winds and swept northeastward across several northern Luzon provinces before exiting into the Philippine Sea the next day. - GMANews.TV
