Ecija town under state of calamity due to A(H1N1)

MANILA, Philippines - Local government officials on Tuesday placed the town of Jaen in Nueva Ecija province under state of calamity after 19 of its residents tested positive for A(H1N1) virus. A report aired over GMA News "24 Oras" said at least three villages (barangays) in Jaen, a third-class municipality, have already been affected by the virus. The villages were Hilera with 17 cases; Pakul, two cases; and Lambakin, which is being monitored after some of its residents reported flu-like symptoms. The report added that more than 100 people in the three villages are being observed by health officials to check if they are indeed infected with the mutant virus. Following the development, the local government also released P600,000 in contingency funds for the government’s response plan. Officials also distributed medicines and relief goods for the residents. Last Sunday, the Department of Health declared an A(H1N1) community outbreak in Jaen as it continues to trace the source of the infection in the province. - Aie Balagtas See, GMANews.TV
