7 killed in Batangas road accident, police say

(Updated 6:03 p.m.) Seven people were killed while four others were hurt Sunday when the passenger jeepney they were riding crashed head-on with a passenger bus along a portion of the South Luzon Arterial Tollway in Batangas province, a police official said. Superintendent Arcadio Ronquillo, spokesman for the Batangas provincial police, said six of the fatalities died on the spot while one expired at a hospital in Ibaan town. He said initial investigation showed the bus was at fault for the incident. “Nag-overtake yung bus sa isang kotse tapos habang overtake ay may nakasalubong na jeep sa kabilang linya kaya nagkabanggaan (The bus was overtaking a car when it crashed into the jeep on the opposite lane)," he said in a phone interview. A dzRH report said the incident occurred shortly after noon when the jeep carrying members of the Pestejo family and heading for Manila collided with the passenger bus (TYK-287) heading for Batangas City.

The report identified at least five of the fatalities who died on the spot as Zosimo, Felizardo, Marlene, Lawrence and Sharmel Pestejo. Declared dead on arrival at the Batangas Regional Hospital was Maricris Pestejo. At least four others, all surnamed Pestejo, were injured and are undergoing treatment, the report added. The bus was driven by one Aurelio Doctora, 47, according to dzRH. Ronquillo said investigation was ongoing as of posting time. – KBK, GMANews.TV
