Two killed in Olongapo landslide - Civil Defense

Two people were reported killed in a landslide following intermittent rain in Olongapo City before noon Tuesday, the Office of Civil Defense said. OCD Central Luzon assistant regional director Nigel Lontoc said search-and-rescue teams rushed to the scene and were still looking for possible survivors. "May initial report na (may) bahay [na] natabunan at may dalawang patay at pito ang survivors. Ito ang kasalukuyang natanggap (Our initial reports showed the landslide hit three houses, and that there were two fatalities and seven survivors)," Lontoc said in an interview on dzBB radio. He cited sketchy initial reports indicating the incident occurred in Sta. Rita village in Olongapo City. A military report said the landslide occurred about 8 a.m. A separate report on dzXL radio identified the two fatalities as Erlinda Macapal, 50; and daughter Manilyn, 12. It identified three of the injured as Erlinda's husband Rogelio; a certain Whey Ann, 10; and Harry, 15, both surnamed Macapal. Lontoc said there was intermittent rain before the landslide. He said their initial reports indicated the rain may have eroded the soil and triggered the landslide. Also, he said there were two landslides, a relatively minor one and a bigger one. "Yung una may guho, ang sunod malaki na may kasamang bato, ang isang bato nabagsakan na bahay (The first was relatively monior. But the second landslide had bigger rocks falling on the houses below)," he said. Troops from the Philippine Army's 24th Infantry Battalion have been deployed to assist in search and rescue operation in the area. — RSJ, GMA News
