Ebdane's son is new Zambales 2nd district rep

The second district of Zambales province has elected a new congressman in the person of Jun Omar Ebdane, son of incumbent Zambales governor and former Defense secretary Hermogenes Ebdane.   Commission on Elections (Comelec) spokesman James Jimenez said Ebdane was proclaimed at around 11:15 a.m. Sunday after he defeated former Zambales governor Amor Deloso.   Ebdane gathered 62,867 votes as against Deloso’ 56,945, Jimenez said. The canvassing started at 8 a.m. and lasted until 10 a.m.   According to Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting (PPCRV), the citizen arm of the Comelec, only 70 percent of the more than 200,000 voters participated in the special polls.   PPCRV chairperson Henrietta de Villa said the reason for the low turnout might be due to the fact that some of the voters who were working or living outside Zambales did not bother to go home to vote.   She also expressed dismay over the reported rampant vote-buying.   “Nadismayado talaga ako kapag vote-buying. Parang naging parte na ng kultura ng eleksyon na kadalasan yung public officials parang expected na ‘yun,” De Villa said.   The special poll was conducted Saturday to elect the district’s new representative after Rep. Antonio Diaz died in August 2011. — KBK, GMA News
