Sitio Calauit: Back to Basics (a photo essay)

In the 1970s, Presidential Proclamation No. 1857 drove away the Tagbanua tribe from their ancestral land in Palawan to make way for the adoption of more than 100 animals from Africa. The Tagbanua settled temporarily in the nearby island of Culion. Since then they have been fighting to win back the land that rightfully belongs to them. The legal battle took 30 years.
In 2010, the National Commission on Indigenous People issued a Certificate of Ancestral Domain Title to the Tagbanua, enabling them to reclaim their land.
