Predawn quake hits Negros, aftershocks expected


A predawn magnitude-3.3 quake rocked Negros Monday, even as the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology warned of possible aftershocks.
 
Phivolcs said the quake, which came weeks after a magnitude-6.9 quake devastated the area, was recorded at 2:28 a.m. and was tectonic in origin. Accorind to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, the February 6 quake left 52 people dead while 61 others have remained missing. 
 
In its bulletin, Phivolcs said the epicenter was traced to 4 km northwest of Jimalalud town in Negros Oriental.
 
However, it did not immediately cite specific areas where the quake was felt.
 
While Phivolcs said the quake was not likely to cause damage, aftershocks may be expected.
 
Quakes in Ilocos, Bohol
 
Meanwhile, Phivolcs also recorded quakes in Ilocos and Bohol shortly before and after midnight of Sunday.
 
In Ilocos, Phivolcs said a magnitude-3.7 quake was recorded at 11:53 p.m. Sunday, with the epicenter at 14 km southeast of Bangui, Ilocos Norte.
 
In Bohol, a magnitude-3.9 quake was recorded at 12:22 a.m. Monday, with the epicenter at 32 km southeast of Anda, Bohol.
 
No damage or aftershock was expected from the two quakes, Phivolcs said. — RSJ, GMA News
