2 killed, 10 hurt as train hits AUV in Quezon in predawn accident

At least two people were killed while 10 were injured, after a Philippine National Railways train hit an Asian utility vehicle in Candelaria town in Quezon province before dawn Thursday.

Candelaria police head Superintendent Arsenio Bantayan said the two fatalities and 10 injured were passengers of the white Innova AUV (ZDH-485) hit by the train.

"Walang boom ang track at doon may naka-assign na flagman. Itong flagman nagpapahinto (ng sasakyan) ‘pag may dumarating na tren. Sabi niya, pinahinto niya ang Innova dahil may sasakyan na nagbibigay-daan sa tren. Despite that, nagdiretso pa rin," Bantayan said in an interview on dzBB radio.

Bantayan said the incident occurred at 4:10 a.m. along a portion of the tracks at Bgy. Masin.

He said the train was heading for Manila while the Innova was heading for Lucena City. The front of the Innova was wrecked, he said.

Citing initial reports from the hospital where the victims were brought, he described one of the fatalities as a woman, and the second as a five-year-old girl.

While he did not immediately name the fatalities, he identified the Innova's driver as Jonathan Domingo Agasin of Caloocan City, and the driver of the train as Francisco Ramos.

He also said the incident did not cause traffic in the area.

When asked if the train was derailed, he said it was not. –KG, GMA News
