Coast Guard to east Visayas fishermen: Don't venture out to sea amid weather disturbance

With a potential cyclone threatening to bring heavy rain to Eastern Visayas, the Philippine Coast Guard dissuaded fishermen in the region Thursday from venturing to sea. Coast Guard spokesman Lt. Cmdr. Armand Balilo said state weather forecasters already warned of scattered rain showers and thunderstorms, radio dzBB's Carlo Mateo reported. Balilo was quoted in the report as saying fishermen especially in the Eastern Samar area should take precautions against flash floods and landslides. He also advised them to monitor radio and television for weather advisories from the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) and the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council. Earlier, PAGASA forecaster Jun Galang said the potential cyclone, an active low-pressure area (ALPA), was estimated at 410 km east of Borongan, Eastern Samar as of 2 a.m. Galang said the ALPA is still gathering strength even as its outward spiral is already affecting parts of Visayas and Mindanao. PAGASA's 5 a.m. bulletin also said widespread rain may fall over the eastern section of Visayas and of Mindanao which may trigger flash floods and landslides. — LBG, GMA News
