Rain, flood drive 300 Camiguin families to evacuation centers

Rain and flooding Thursday night prompted at least 300 families in Camiguin province to flee their homes for the safety of evacuation centers.

 

The Camiguin governor’s office said Friday some parts of Mahinog, Sagay, and Catarman towns in the island province were still submerged in rainwater as of this posting.

 

Currently, some 390 families were still in various evacuation centers, according to data from the Provincial Palanning and Development Officer of Camiguin.

 

No casualties have been reported so far in Camiguin.

 

The low pressure area causing heavy rains in Camiguin was last spotted at 450 km east of Borongan, Eastern Samar, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said in its weather advisory Friday. 

 

Another low pressure area was located at 530 km east northeast of Aparri, Cagayan.

 

These low pressure areas will continue to bring scattered to widespread rains and thunderstorms over Bicol Region, Visayas and Mindanao, and may trigger flashfloods and landslides, the state weather bureau said. VS, GMA News 

 

Meanwhile, the southwest monsoon affecting Luzon also brought some 73 families to evacuation centers, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported Thursday.

 

Damage to infrastructure, agriculture, and private property – due to monsoon rains and flooding – reached P28.519 million, according to NDRRMC estimates.
