Classes suspended province-wide in Laguna, Cavite and in flood-hit areas in NCR, Luzon

(Updated 8:45 a.m.) - Classes in public and private schools in some parts of Metro Manila and in parts of Luzon are suspended Tuesday, July 31, as Typhoon Gener which brought heavy rains and flooding lashed north-northwest and is moving at 7 kms per hour, according to GMA News' "State of the Nation", "Unang Hirit", and radio dzBB.

Laguna announced a province-wide suspension of classes in all levels after several of its areas were affected by the floods from heavy rain in past days.

"As of 10 p.m. yesterday in-announce ng chairman ng PDRRMC Laguna na suspendido ang klase ngayon all levels," Laguna Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council head Jen Zorell Nazareno said in an interview on dzBB radio Tuesday.

Nazareno said there was still rain over Laguna, and the suspension of classes was meant to ensure students' safety.

He said there was still flooding in parts of the province including Mabitac, Sta. Maria, Sta. Cruz, Siniloan, San Pedro, Sta. Rosa and Cabuyao.

"Ang iba hanggang tuhod, iba hanggang sakong," he said.

Mabitac town in Laguna is one of the areas hit hardest by floods, prompting the Department of Education to suspend classes there as early as past 9 p.m. Monday.

The University of the Philippines Los Baños said classes were also suspended there although office work is not suspended. Cavite, NCR, rest of Luzon

In Cavite, Governor Juanito Victor Remulla suspended classes province-wide up to the high school level, the Department of Education said.

In Baguio City, Mayor Mauricio Domogan said there will be no classes for all levels in both public and private schools, according to a report on "Unang Hirit."

In Pangasinan, Gov. Amado Espino Jr. said there are no classes from preschool to high school levels in public and private schools, the "Unang Hirit" report said. Classes at the preschool to high school levels in Dagupan City were earlier suspended for the day, radio dzBB reported.

In Metro Manila, Malabon City said classes remained suspended in Dampalit Elementary School 1, Dampalit Elementary School Main and Panghulo High School.

“Ang iskwelahang ‘yan may tubig sa paligid,” Malabon City public information officer Bong Padua said in an interview on dzBB radio.

In Valenzuela City, classes were suspended in the preschool, elementary and high school levels, both public and private, in 13 villages.

The city government, in a post on its Facebook page, said these schools are in the following barangays/villages:

Balangkas
Bisig
Coloong
Isla
Mabolo
Palasan
Pariancillo Villa
Pasolo
Poblacion
Polo
Tagalag
Wawang Pulo

Classes are also suspended in Dalandanan National High School, the city government said.

Meanwhile, in Central Luzon, the Department of Education said classes will remain suspended Tuesday in Obando, Bulacan.

Meanwhile, the University of the Philippines said classes and office work in the Manila campus were to resume Tuesday.
