3 soldiers killed in ambush near MSU in Marawi City

Three soldiers were killed while 10 others were hurt after they were fired upon by unidentified armed men Wednesday night near the Mindanao State University in Marawi City, a regional military spokesman said Thursday. About 9 p.m. Wednesday, elements of the Army's 65th Infantry Battalion were patrolling near the vicinity of the MSU campus when attacked by undetermined number of armed men, said Captain Albert Caber, spokesperson for the Army's 1st Infantry Division.
Caber said they suspect the attack could be in retaliation for the military's participation in the campaign against illegal logging and illegal drugs.
The police are now investigating the incident in coordination with the 103rd Infantry Brigade, Caber added. Maj. Gen. Ricardo Rainier ruz III,  division (Tabak) commander, vowed to go after the perpetrators. "As facilitator of community development, we sometimes suffer in the hands of these lawless [elements] who disturbe the peace but let us not allow them to continue, we serve for our people, lets go for justice," Cruz said. — Patricial Denise Chiu/RSJ, GMA News
