Iloilo PNP kill armed robber, arrest five others

A suspected armed robber was gunned down, while his five cohorts were arrested after they robbed a cooking oil company in Pavia town in Iloilo late Friday afternoon. Police initially identified the fatality as Sonny Daw-ang.

The armed robbers had burglarized the King's Oil cooking oil office in Hibao-an village in Pavia at 4:50 p.m. Friday, Iloilo-based news site The Daily Guardian reported.

Ronald Fito, a King’s Oil security guard, said the six robbers pretended to buy cooking oil before declaring the heist.

Two of the robbers disarmed a security guard while the other four, armed with handguns and a grenade, took some P200,000 cash.

But as the suspects fled towards San Miguel town aboard a Clint taxi driven by Raymond Ngirngir, the Philippine National Police caught up with them and cornered them near the main entrance of the Savannah Subdivision.

A shootout ensued where Daw-ang allegedly tried to lob a grenade but was shot dead before he could release it.

The other suspects then surrendered. They were identified as Elmer Leco-an of Brgy. San Matias, Dingle; Joebert Gumban of Brgy. Ginalinan Nuevo, Dingle; Edwin Anorico of Brgy. Lincud, Dingle; Joemarie Gine of Brgy. Tuburan, Pototan; and Reynold Eny of Brgy. Agcuyawan Pulo, Barotac Nuevo.

Cabbie Ngirngir was also arrested but he denied being part of the robbery group.

Recovered from the suspects were P24,400 cash, a 9-mm pistol, and two .38-cal. revolvers. — DVM, GMA News
