Mountaineers rescued at Mt. Apo National Park

KIDAPAWAN CITY - Seven mountaineers were successfully rescued by the Kidapawan City Emergency Response Unit after they were stranded near Mount Apo on Monday afternoon.

According to a National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council report, mountain climbers were trapped at the Marbel river while descending from the Lake Venado camp site through the Kidapawan trail at the Mt. Apo National Park.

According to Kidapawan City information officer Psalmer Bernalte, the mountaineers failed to cross the Marbel River, which swelled dangerously following torrential rains in the area in the past few days.

Bernalte identified the climbers as Jovelyn Roxas of Makati City; Marie Paz Llagas, Pauline Mejia, Jonalyn Vega, April Lyn, and Mark Garcia from Cavite City; and their local mountain guide Arnel Arancos.

Arancos managed to communicate with the Kidapawan City’s investment office and seek help for the stranded climbers.
The emergency response unit was able to rescue the mountaineers by using ropes that facilitated the river crossing.

Bernalte said if conditions at the Marbel River remain dangerous, the local government might not allow mountaineers to climb Mt. Apo in the meantime. — DVM/YA, GMA News
