Zamboanga City, parts of Region 9 under state of calamity

Zamboanga City and some areas in the Zamboanga Peninsula region have been placed under a state of calamity due to heavy rain there since last weekend.

Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (RDRRMC) head Adriano Fuego said Tuesday Zamboanga City officials decided to declare a state of calamity after a meeting on Monday.

"Kahapon nag-meeting ang CDRRMC. Yan ang i-declare sa state of calamity ang Zamboanga City," Fuego said in an interview over radio dzBB. Fuego said a state of calamity was also declared over Siocon and Sirawai towns in Zamboanga del Norte province. He said many villages had been affected by the floods in past days. Even though the rain had been heavy last September 22 and 23, Fuego said the floods have started to subside in Zamboanga City, and the weather had improved on Tuesday.

"Ngayon walang baha na, hopefully tuloy-tuloy na ito," he said. - VVP, GMA News
