Coast Guard: Korean vessel rams fishing boat off Davao; 11 fishermen rescued

At least 11 fishermen were rescued after a Korean-registered vessel rammed their fishing boat off Davao City over the weekend, the Coast Guard said Sunday evening. According to the Coast Guard in a statement on its website, the cargo vessel MV Rainbow Joy, owned by Ocean Eleven Shipping Corp., rammed the fishing banca Raisa off Ligid Island in Igacos. "[W]hile the fishermen were hauling their nets around 9:00 a.m., they noticed that the [cargo ship] was heading towards their position. Diligent efforts were made to call the attention of the said foreign vessel but to no avail until it hit the forward portion of their fishing banca that made it [sink] instantly," the Coast Guard said. The fishermen said that while the foreign vessel slowed down after ramming their banca, it went back to normal cruising speed. Its crew did not try to check the condition of the fishermen, the Coast Guard said. However, the 11 were rescued by crew of a sister fishing vessel and were brought to the shoreline of Barangay Balet in Igacos. "All of the rescued fishermen are all in good condition. The sunken fishing vessel Raisa was already removed and safely towed to Isla Verde, Davao City," the Coast Guard said. It said the ill-fated vessel's captain was advised to file a marine protest regarding the incident. — BM, GMA News
