Magnitude-5.8 quake shakes storm-battered Davao area

A magnitude-5.8 quake shook Davao Oriental at Intensity IV shortly before dawn Monday, with state seismologists warning of possible aftershocks.

Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology director Renato Solidum Jr. allayed fears the quake could generate a tsunami in the area, which is still reeling from the devastation brough by Typhoon Pablo.

"Hindi sapat ang ganyang magnitude mag-generate ng tsunami (It is not that powerful to generate a tsunami)," Solidum said in an interview on dzBB radio.

Solidum also said that while the quake was not enough to cause damage to buildings, it may cause aftershocks.

"Posibleng magkaroon ng aftershock (Aftershocks are possible)," he said.

An updated Phivolcs bulletin indicated the quake occurred at 5:45 a.m., with the epicenter at 65 km southeast of Malita in Davao del Sur.

It was tectonic in origin and was initially felt at:

- Intensity IV: Mati, Davao Oriental; San Isidro, Davao Oriental
- Intensity III: General Santos City; Digos City, Manay, Davao Oriental; Tagum, Davao - Oriental; Padada, Davao del Sur
- Intensity II: Koronadal, South Cotabato; Matalam, North Cotabato

An Intensity IV quake is described by Phivolcs as "Moderately Strong," felt generally by people indoors and by some people outdoors.

The United States Geological Survey, meanwhile, measured the quake at magnitude 5.6, with the epicenter at:

- 8 km east of Talisay
- 26 km south of Mati
- 27 km southeast of Lupon
- 56 km southeast of Pantukan
