Marcos town mayoral bet shot dead in Ilocos Norte

Unidentified motorcycle-riding men shot dead on Saturday afternoon a barangay captain planning to run for mayor in Marcos town in Ilocos Norte province, police said.

Ilocos Norte police public information office head Superintendent Jeffrey Gorospe said a dragnet operation is in place for the killers of Alfredo Arce.

"Mga 1:30 PM, nabaril si Mayoral candidate barangay captain Alfredo Arce (Arce, a mayoral candidate, was shot at 1:30 p.m.)," Gorospe said in an interview on dzBB radio.

He said the suspects were last reported heading north, adding that a dragnet is now in place.

According to Supt. Jovencio Badua, spokesman of the Ilocos regional police, also shot during the attack on Arce were Apoljoy Joaquin and Karljayan Agustin (5-years-old), who were both rushed to Sta Teresita Hospital afterwards.

Suspects fled after the incident on board an unidentified motorcycle heading north.

Citing initial reports reaching him, Gorospe said Arce, who he described as a former policeman, did not receive any death threats before he was gunned down.

But he said they are now looking into at least two motives behind the killing.

"Tingin namin personal at pagtakbo niya as mayor," he said.
A separate report on dzRH radio said the victim sustained gunshot wounds in the chest.  – KDM/ELR, GMA News
