Police arrest 5, seize firearms in Quezon raid

Police arrested at least five people, including a police officer and a barangay official, and seized several firearms and weapons in simultaneous raids against suspected gun-for-hire groups in Quezon province Wednesday. The Philippine National Police Region 4-A (Calabarzon)'s Special Operations Group served ten search warrants in separate raids, according to a police report obtained by GMA News Online. According to the report, police operatives at around 5:30 a.m. simultaneously served eight search warrants issued by Sta. Cruz, Laguna Judge Cynthia Ricablanca at Lusacan and Ayusan 1 villages in Tiaong, Quezon province. Police arrested three people—Clodualdo Enriquez (a.k.a. Cocoy), PO3 Cipriano Gunio Calayag, and Tolentino Villanueva (a.k.a. Tony)—and confiscated several guns and rounds of ammunition, according to the report. Police were also able to raid the residence of Honesto Guerrero, who remains at large, where they were also able to obtain several guns and rounds of ammunition, along with a fan knife (balisong), the report added. Suspects and confiscated items were brought to Camp Nakar in Lucena City, the report said. Meanwhile, in a separate 5:40 a.m. raid, police served two search warrants against Barangay Captain Juan Isagani Magundayao and Domingo Uri and arrested them, according to the same report. Police also seized several guns and rounds of ammunition from the suspects, including sachets of marijuana, during the raid. The suspects and confiscated items were brought to Camp Vicente Lim in Calamba City, Laguna. With two more weeks to go before the May 13 elections, the PNP has intensified its efforts to thwart gun-for-hire syndicates. In an earlier dzBB radio report, Calabarzon regional police head Chief Superintendent Benito Estipona was quoted saying they are after such groups. — Amanda Fernandez/BM, GMA News
