Death toll from LPA rains rises to 8, infrastructure damage reaches at least P47-M

The death toll from the effects of rain, floods and landslides caused by low-pressure areas since late July rose to eight as of Wednesday, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said.

 

In an Aug. 7 update posted on its website early Thursday, the NDRRMC said the fatalities were from Western and Central Visayas and from the Zamboanga area.

 

At least 99,762 families or 498,772 people had been affected by these weather systems, it added.

 

Damage to property was initially estimated at P47.467 million.

 

The NDRRMC said the casualties now include eight fatalities, 21 injured and one missing. It identified the fatalities as:

 

 

Still missing is Pulina Sumimba, 49, of Brgy. Sibalic in Gutalac town in Zamboanga del Norte.

 

Of the 21 injured from flooding, landslide, and strong wind and wave surges, nine were from Laguna, seven from Sarangani, four from South Cotabato, and one from Zamboanga City.

 

The NDRRMC also said 39 houses were destroyed while 147 were damaged.

 

Bridges

 

In Romblon, the wooden support of the Noe Morales Coco Detour Bridge was washed out and is currently being repaired. 

 

Also in Romblon, the Mabulo Coco Detour Bridge also had cut-off bridge approaches.

 

Damage to property

 

The cost of damage to agriculture in Zamboanga City alone was estimated at P467,020.

 

Damage to infrastructure in Iloilo and Zamboanga City was estimated at P47 million. —KG, GMA News
