Zamboanga fighting resumes, fire reported in Brgy. Sta. Catalina
(Updated 7:08 a.m.) Renewed gun battles between Philippine security forces and a faction of the Moro National Liberation Front started the second week of the Zamboanga City crisis. Gunfire was heard from Lustre Street in Barangays Sta. Catalina and Sta. Barbara since 6 a.m., Monday, and went on for more than 20 minutes, said a radio dzBB report. Meanwhile, a predawn fire occurred at about 5:30 a.m. at Barangay Sta. Catalina, Zamboanga City, radio dzBB's Benjie Liwanag Jr. also reported. The crisis started last Monday when MNLF gunmen took several civilians hostage and engaged government forces in a series of firefights. The Armed Forces of the Philippines said that as of 7 p.m. Sunday, at least 51 "rogue MNLF elements" had been killed while nine were wounded, with 48 captured or surrendered. On the AFP side, three had been killed, while 63 were wounded. Also, three police officers from the Philippine National Police were killed with 10 wounded. At least five civilians were killed and 23 wounded, the AFP added.— DVM, GMA News
