Tacloban folk continue recovery effort from Yolanda devastation

TACLOBAN CITY — On the second weekend after Super Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) battered the Visayas, more residents are coming out of their homes and resuming daily activities.

Early Sunday morning, many residents rode tricycles and minicabs to the markets while others cleaned up their surroundings, sweeping trash in front of their houses.

Some residents are also anticipating the telecast of the fight between Filipino boxing icon and Sarangani Rep. Emmanuel "Manny" Pacquiao and Brandon Rios from Macau.

A report by radio dzBB's Carlo Mateo said many residents, despite the losses they suffered from Yolanda, are keeping tabs on the fight and want Pacquiao to prevail in as little as three rounds.

Tacloban City was a virtual ghost town after Yolanda battered it and other parts of the Visayas last Nov. 8.

Very few people went out of their houses in the first few days after Yolanda struck. Last Sunday, much of the city was like a deserted place.

Meanwhile, an Armed Forces of the Philippines official urged the public to adopt fishermen from this city who were affected by Yolanda.

Lt. Col. Harold Cabunoc, head of the Army's 7th Civil Relations Group, said the Yellow Boat of Hope Foundation is trying to help the fishermen who lost everything.

"To accomplish the mission, we are enlisting the help of kind-hearted people around the world to donate small amounts of money to finance the procurement of boats," he said in a post on his blog site.
