Task force: No more major criminality in Tacloban 1 month after Yolanda

Unlike the first few days after Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) hit, there is no more report of major criminality in Tacloban City, a task force maintaining peace and order there said on Saturday.

Task Force Yolanda spokesman Capt. Amado Gutierrez made this assessment nearly a month after Yolanda hit Tacloban and parts of Eastern Visayas and Southern Luzon.

"Ang security concerns noong unang araw ng Yolanda, wala na tayong naririnig na report. Dahilan na 'yan sa epektibo na deployment ng PNP ng augmentation galing sa iba't ibang lugar ng bansa," Gutierrez said in an interview on dzBB radio.

Yolanda battered the Visayas and Southern Luzon last Nov. 8, leaving behind more than 5,700 dead.

In the first few days after Yolanda, reports of looting were rampant in Tacloban City, one of the areas hit hardest by the monster typhoon.

Meanwhile, Gutierrez said everyday life in Tacloban continues to normalize, with street lights now back on.

However, he said households have yet to get electricity again, as repair work for electric posts and facilities is still ongoing.

"Ang poste ang natumba ang inaayos pa (The posts that were toppled are still being repaired)," he said. — LBG, GMA News
