NBI raids Cavite call center over ‘pirated’ operating systems

The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) has conducted a raid on a call center in Bacoor, Cavite suspected of using unlicensed software.

According to a report on "24 Oras" aired Friday, the NBI's Intellectual Property Rights Division (IPRD) led the raid on TaskUs call center over complaints that it uses pirated operating systems.

Authorities seized hundreds of computers that will undergo forensic examination for further evidence.

NBI Special Investigator Carlos Borromeo said the call center faces charges for violating copyright infringement under Republic Act 8293.

“Bawat computer, dapat may software sila na genuine. Bibili sila ng software. One is to one yun, unless mayroon silang open agreement na ina-allow sila magreproduce sa ilang computers,” Borromeo said.

But TaskUs facility manager Victor Morada said the company uses licensed operating systems.

“Definitely, yes. It's (our operating systems) legit. Ang alam naman namin wala kaming tinatago,” Borromeo said.

Aside from this, the call center is also being accused of not paying proper taxes and illegally selling sex enhancement drugs.

Operations at the call center will be suspended until the investigation is over.  — Andrei Medina/JDS, GMA News
