Floods affect 99k in 17 Maguindanao towns


More than 99,000 people have been affected by floods that have swamped 17 towns in Maguindanao due to persistent rain since mid-June, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said Thursday evening.

In its report, the NDRRMC said continuous rain since June 13 caused the Rio Grande de Mindanao and the Patot River to overflow.

On Thursday, a flash flood hit Barangays Salimbao, Bulalo and Katuli in Sultan Kudarat town.

"As of 03 July 2014, a total of 19,837 families or 99,185 persons from 132 barangays have been affected by the flooding," the NDRRMC said.

It said flooding has affected the following towns:

  • Ampatuan
  • Datu Abdullah Sangki
  • Datu Montawal
  • Datu Odin Sinsuat
  • Datu Piang
  • Datu Salibo
  • Mother Kabuntalan
  • Mamasapano
  • Pagalungan
  • Northern Kabuntalan
  • Rajah Buayan
  • Sharif Saydona
  • Sultan Sa Barongis
  • Sultan Kudarat
  • General Salipada Pendatum
  • Talitay
  • Buldon
The NDRRMC said some bridges and roads in affected barangays were impassable to light vehicles.

Classes were also suspended in some schools in Datu Piang, Datu Montawal and Buldon. — Joel Locsin/JDS, GMA News
