Lahar flows in village near restive Mayon Volcano

Amid heavy rain from Tropical Storm Mario (Fung-Wong), lahar flowed in a barangay near restive Mayon Volcano in Albay province Friday.

The flow was noted in Barangay Maipon in Guinobatan town in Albay, radio dzBB's Allan Gatus reported.

Guinobatan is within the danger zone of Mayon, whose recent increased activity prompted the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology to raise the alert level there to "3."

Residents in the danger zone of the volcano had been evacuated to safer ground earlier this week.

Phivolcs said that in the last 24 hours, Mayon's seismic network recorded 22 volcanic earthquakes and 70 rockfall events.

"It is recommended that the 6-km radius Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) around the volcano and the 7-km Extended Danger Zone (EDZ) on the southeastern flank be enforced due to the danger of rock falls, landslides and sudden explosions or dome collapse that may generate hazardous volcanic flows," it said. —Joel Locsin/KG, GMA News
