Sun.Star: 4 Iloilo jail guards probed over murder try

Four jail guards in Iloilo City are now in hot water following a murder attempt on an inmate during their shift last weekend. Sun-Star Iloilo reported Tuesday night that authorities at the Iloilo City Jail suspended all privileges of the inmates there following the incident. Ordered investigated for laxity were Senior Jail Officer 1 Joel Dogonan, Jail Officer 3 Fidel Gilbert Sabio, Jail Officer 2 Alejandro Deza and Jail Officer 1 Von Martinez. The four were on duty when inmates Jesus "Jing" Espinosa Jr, Joel Barcebas and Michael Sombisi tried to stab to death former "partner-in-crime" Glenn Yturriaga Friday afternoon. Jail warden Chief Insp. Joel Superficial ordered a "ground inspection" of all cells, including those in the annex area and in the main building to gather evidence and check on the inmates. He also ordered some privileges suspended, including afternoon recreation schedule and conjugal visits, while the investigation is ongoing. Superficial said the investigation will go on despite the confession of some inmates linking Espinosa and Barcebas to the crime. Sombisi owned up to the crime. Yturriaga was arrested Friday afternoon for theft. Minutes after he was turned over to the Bureau of Jail Management and Penlogy, the three blocked his way and tried to stab him. Yturriaga is still confined in a hospital and is reportedly recovering. - GMANews.TV
