Dolphin released in CamSur returns, is rescued from being eaten by locals

A dolphin that was trapped Saturday off Camarines Sur province returned to the area Sunday, but got a nearly deadly welcome there.

Some local residents caught the dolphin and tried to kill it for food, GMA News correspondent Peewee Bacuño reported Sunday evening.

On Saturday, the dolphin had been trapped in a resort's protection net off Sta. Rita island in Del Gallego town, but was freed and released back into the water.

It turned out that it merely swam around Ragay Gulf and returned to the area.

Resort owner Sherwin Bugarin, an ecological volunteer, rushed to a barangay near his resort when he learned the dolphin had been caught by residents there.

There was tension when Bugarin confronted some of the local residents who caught the dolphin and refused to release it.

Bugarin's group forcibly took the dolphin and sped off aboard a speedboat. His group found wounds on the dolphin. He notified local Del Gallego officials of the incident.

The group is expected to have the dolphin examined then released on Monday. — Joel Locsin/JDS, GMA News
