Batangas Gov. Vilma Santos denies rumors she will run in 2016 elections

Batangas Gov. Vilma Santos-Recto dismissed rumors that she will run as Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte's partner in the upcoming 2016 presidential elections, GMA News TV Live reported on Friday.

According to earlier reports, Santos was being considered as Duterte's running mate in the upcoming elections.

The governor said she has never had formal talks with Duterte regarding the election and only heard of the mayor's plans through the media.

Santos said she will remain focused on her remaining term as the governor of Batangas and will do so until her possible retirement in 2016.

The governor added that she may return to the entertainment industry when her term ends.

Senate President Pro-Tempore Ralph Recto said last year that his wife wants to go back to her acting career and has no plans to run for a higher position in the 2016 elections.

Duterte has hinted at a presidential run but has said in the past that he does not want a national position

Despite this, political ads featuring him and the development of Davao City have been airing on primetime TV and have been spreading online. — Rie Takumi/JDS, GMA News
