E-trikes to ply Boracay roads soon

The Malay municipal government in the province of Aklan has drawn up plans to phase out the traditional tricycles and replace them with the environment friendly e-trikes.

The e-trikes would be the main means of transportation for residents, local and foreign tourists as the traditional tricycles are perceived to be harmful to the environment.

The legislation is aimed at protecting Boracay island, a popular tourist destination because of its white sand beach resorts.

Malay Councilor Natalie Paderes has the support of tricycle drivers so that there are already about 140 e-trike units on the island.

Paderes said that although the use of e-trikes is widely accepted there are drivers who still opt to use traditional tricycles because of problems with the batteries of e-trikes.

Local officials are looking into ways to solve the problem to assure that traditional tricycles will no longer be used on the island. — BAP, GMA News
