Interior Secretary Mel Sarmiento told GMA News' Balita Pilipinas that he received information that the wounded policemen have been airlifted from the site of the encounter in Barangay Sta. Margarita.

The Cagayan Police Regional Office said two section of the Regional Public Safety Battalion 2 led by Superintendent Juan Aggaside, encountered a group of armed NPA members in the barangay.

Sarmiento said the policemen went to Barangay Sta. Margarito due to an incident of torching involving suspected rebels.

The police, however, were ambushed by the rebels.

"Our troops fought back," he said.

Sarmiento could not say how many rebels were killed in the clash, but said that the policemen were reinforced by additional police teams and the Philippine Army.

The Philippine Air Force also provided air support, he added. —ALG, GMA News
