PHIVOLCS records ash eruption at Mt. Kanlaon

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) recorded an ash eruption at Negros Island's Mount Kanlaon at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.

According to a PHIVOLCS advisory, the eruption lasted 12 minutes, and a "booming sound" was heard in Sitio Guintubdan, Barangays Ara-al and Yubo, and La Carlota City in Negros Occidental; and Barangay Pula in Negros Oriental's Canlaon City.

An eruption plum 1,550 meters high was also seen above the crater, with traces of light ash-fall reported in Sitio Guintubdan, Ara-al, and La Carlota City.

An Alert Level 1 was raised over Kanlaon, with entry into the four-kilometer radius Permanent Danger Zone strictly prohibited due to the possibility of more steam-driven eruptions.

PHIVOLCS also warned airplanes against flying near the volcano's summit due to the danger from an eruption and airborne ash. — DVM, GMA News
