3 killed in Army-NPA clash in Zamboanga del Sur

Two suspected New People's Army (NPA) rebels and a civilian military volunteer were killed in a clash in Bayog, Zamboanga del Sur Tuesday afternoon.

Maj. Filemon Tan Jr., spokesperson of the Armed Forces' Western Mindanao Command, said troops of the Philippine Army's 53rd Infantry Battalion encountered a group insurgents at Purok 7, Barangay Supon in Bayoy town at 3:05 p.m.

Tan said the slain rebels were identified only as a certain Nilo and Chery. He did not identify the civilian volunteer casualty.

Troops seized an M16 rifle and subversive documents at the site of the encounter.

The administration of President Rodrigo Duterte has reopened talks with the National Democratic Front-Communist Party of the Philippines, which failed during the time of former President Benigno Aquino III.

The government stopped negotiations with the communist group in April 2013. The government then said negotiations were “going nowhere” after a 22-month impasse, which started February 2011. —ALG, GMA News
