Mindanao school probes students in ROTC hazing video

Several students of University of Mindanao-Tagum College are under investigation and may be expelled from the school for their involvement in initiation rites of ROTC cadets, according to Joseph Morong's report on "24 Oras" on Monday.

A video of the hazing showing cadets being hit hard repeatedly on their chest and stomach was uploaded on the internet.

In the video, one cadet was seen whimpering in pain every time he was hit. He was also seen collapsing on the floor several times.

One of the persons conducting the hazing was heard saying, "Kung gusto mong maranasan ang naranasan ng senior mo, tanggapin mo 'yan lahat!"

In a statement, the University of Mindanao-Tagum College said it is now looking into the incident.

"UM Tagum College has already acted to investigate this hazing incident starting Friday, July 15, 2016. The perpetrators have been identified and will be subjected to disciplinary action leading to expulsion," it said.

It added that the university "does not tolerate any form of hazing by school organizations, fraternities or ROTC inside or outside the school premises."

Under Section 2 of Republic Act 8049 or the Anti-Hazing Law, "No hazing or initiation rites in any form or manner by a fraternity, sorority or organization shall be allowed without prior written notice to the school authorities or head of organization seven (7) days before the conduct of such initiation..."

Meanwhile, Section 1 states that hazing, "as used in this act, is an initiation rite or pratice as a prerequisite for admission into membership in a fraternity, sorority or organization by placing the recruit, neophyte or applicant in some embarrassing or humiliating situations... otherwise subjecting him to physical or psychological suffering or injury." —KBK, GMA News
