NPA rebels release police officer abducted last month

Communist New People’s Army (NPA) rebels released before noon Friday the police officer they abducted last month.

Supt. Arvin Montenegro, officer-in-charge of Tandag City Police, said PO1 Richard Yu of Carmen Municipal Police Station was brought by his abductors to Sitio Hitaob, Barangay Awasian, Tandag City, Surigao del Sur, at 11:15 a.m.

“Yung mga NPA na kumidnap ang naghatid,” Montenegro said in a phone interview with reporters.

Yu was fetched by his family, Vice Governor Manuel Alameda, Sangguniang Bayan member Henrich Pimentel, and Bishop Modesto Villasanta.

Montenegro said Yu lost weight but has no injuries. Nevertheless, he was brought to Adela Memorial Hospital for medical checkup. He will also undergo tactical debriefing.

Montenegro said Yu was released as an act of goodwill in connection with the ongoing peace talks between the government and the Communist Party of the Philippines-National Democratic Front in Oslo, Norway.

The government and the NPA are both observing ceasefire in connection with the peace talks.

Yu was abducted by members of NPA last July 5. He was accused of involvement in illegal drug operations in his area. —KBK, GMA News
