Cops on alert vs 'Magdalo' recruitment try in Bicol

The Philippine National Police (PNP) has intensified its intelligence operations in Bicol following reports that members of the Magdalo Group are recruiting members there. Radio DZBB reported that Senior Supt. Bal Tira, acting regional police chief, said at least two members of the Magdalo group were sighted in Camarines Sur province. He said the Magdalos appeared to target for recruitment the Army's 9th Infantry Division, but declined to elaborate. He also declined to name the two Magdalo members. The Magdalo group, which has links to now-Senator Antonio Trillanes IV, staged a mutiny in Makati City in July 2003, over alleged corruption in the military. In past weeks, persistent reports indicated groups are planning destabilization moves in time for the verdict of the Sandiganbayan on the plunder case of former President Joseph Estrada. The graft court is due to hand down its verdict on or before September 15. Estrada's supporters had denied plotting any destabilization move, with Estrada himself scoring what he called the government's "paranoia." - GMANews.TV
