CDO environmentalists to seek action vs. illegal mining, illegal logging

The head of an environment conservation group said the recent flooding that hit Cagayan de Oro should have been prevented or the damage it caused lessened if officials acted on the lessons learned from their experience with Typhoon Sendong six years ago.

Orlando Ravanera, Task Force Kinaiyahan chairman, called for an emergency meeting on Wednesday to discuss the recent flood that hit the city.

The group plans to meet with Environment Secretary Gina Lopez to discuss the means to put a stop on illegal mining and illegal logging activities.

They believe that the flooding was a result, in part, of the government's failure to stop the proliferation of illegal mining and the practice of illegal logging in the city and nearby provinces.

He said he had been dubbed as a "Prophet of Doom" for always reminding government officials to protect the city from flooding similar to what happened in 2011, when Typhoon Sendong wreaked havoc in the cities of Cagayan de Oro and Iligan.

Over 3,000 people died and thousands were homeless as rivers overflowed and floods ravaged through the cities. — BAP, GMA News
