Massive floods hit several areas in Caraga region; rescue ops ongoing

Forced evacuation and rescue operations are ongoing in several areas in the Caraga region in Mindanao due to widespread floods caused by days of continuous rain from a low-pressure area.

Rescue efforts have continued for residents already trapped in the flood while forced evacuation was enforced, according to GMA News reports.

Waist-deep to above-roof-level floods hit several areas in the region as its river systems overflow.

Floodwater has swamped a national highway in Agusan del Sur's Rosario town.

Residents in flooded towns of San Francisco and San Luis have been forced to use bamboo rafts as their means of transportation. Houses in some areas in the municipality of Lapaz have been submerged, especially those in Barangay Panagangan.

Also, low-lying areas in Agusan del Norte's Buenavista town are flooded.

In Surigao del Sur, meanwhile, among the badly hit areas is Barangay Mangagoy in Bislig City.

Relief operations are ongoing for resdients affected by the floods, even as weather forecasters warn of continuous rain this Sunday.

In its 5 a.m. weather update, state weather bureau PAGASA said the LPA was 70 kilometers south of Davao del Sur early Sunday morning, affecting Mindanao on Sunday, while the tail-end of a cold front would affect the Visayas and southern Luzon. —LBG, GMA News
