32 killed as bus falls off ravine in Nueva Ecija

At least 32 people were killed and more than 20 were hurt after a passenger bus fell into a ravine in Carranglan, Nueva Ecija on Tuesday morning.

The figure was from the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office of Sta. Fe town, Raffy Tima reported on GMA News TV's "State of the Nation."

Senior Inspector Robert de Guzman, Carrangalan police officer-in-charge, said the incident happened at past 11 a.m. in Barangay Capintalan.

He said bystanders saw the speeding LeoMaric minibus, bound for Candon, Ilocos Sur, fell into an 80- to 100-foot ravine.

De Guzman said the bus was in total wreck.

He said at least 40 passengers, including the dead and injured, have been brought up to the side of the road.

The injured were brought to a hospital in Bambang, Nueva Vizcaya.

In a radio dzBB interview, Michael Calma of the Nueva Ecija Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office said among those killed were 18 female passengers, seven male passengers and a child.

Cama said at least 22 people were injured in the accident.

YouScoopers, meanwhile, shared photos and a video of the rescue operations conducted by local authorities.

The bus was not out of line and has a franchise, Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) spokesperson and board member Aileen Lizada said in a radio interview.

She said they have sent a team to the area to conduct an investigation on the incident.

Carranglan Mayor Mary Abad said the highway where the incident happened is accident-prone.

“Accident-prone iyang highway going to Abra. Maraming bangin, zigzag ‘yan. Ang report sa amin ay 80 feet ang kinahulugan, dalawang taas ng kawayan, nahulog ‘yung bus, nawalan ng preno,” she said. —ALG/NB, GMA News
