2 passengers die, 16 hurt as jeepney turns turtle in Bataan

Two female passengers were killed and 16 others were hurt in an accident involving a passenger jeepney in Bagac, Bataan.

Police identified the victims as May Kawamura, 39, and Yannie Sanguyo, 30, residents of Pampanga province.

Senior Inspector Albert Manabat, Bagac deputy police chief, said the jeepney was navigating a curved portion of Gov. JJ Linao Avenue in Barangay Binukawan when its driver, Edmundo Balmaceda, lost control of the vehicle.

The jeepney, which came from Floridablanca in Pampanga, turned turtle.

Manabat said Kawamura and Sanguyo were declared dead on arrival at the Bagac Community Medical Hospital.

The driver told police that the jeepney's brakes malfunctioned as he was shifting to a low gear while on the curved portion of the road.

Seven of the 16 injured passengers had been confined at the Bataan General Hospital and another was transferred to a hospital in Pampanga.

Police are preparing charges against the jeepney driver, who is currently detained at the Bagac Police Station. —report from Ernie Esconde/ALG/KG, GMA News
