Military sniper engages Maute group in Marawi City

Government troops on Saturday morning continued to clash with members of the terrorist Maute Group occupying strategic positions as they lay siege Marawi City.

An exclusive video by GMA News' Jun Veneracion showed a military blocking unit engaging snipers of the Maute group using the Philippine army's counter snipers.

Earlier, Marawi City mayor Majul Usman Gandamra appealed to government troops to minimize the use of heavy artillery to avoid civilian casualties, as over a thousand residents are still trapped in their houses.

As of May 26, Friday the military said that around 31 members of the group have been killed, while 11 soldiers and two policemen died on the government side.

The Maute group have also taken 15 people in Marawi City hostage.
