BARELY A MONTH AFTER ATTACK

TF Marawi believes Maute fighters are running out of ammunition

Government troops on Saturday said that they believe that terrorist group Maute is already running out of ammunition, barely a month after it overran Marawi City.

A report by Alan Gatus on radio dzBB quoted Task Force Marawi spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Jo-Ar Herrera as saying that the fighters' seemed to already be exhausting what's left of their ammunition.

The war between the military and the ISIS-linked Maute group entered its 26th day on Saturday, and has already cost the lives of more than 300 people, including 225 Maute members, 59 from the government, and 26 civilians.

The terrorists attacked the southern Philippine city on May 23.

Despite the reported decline in ammunition, the Maute group displayed continued resistance, the report said.

Their defenses have the capability to wound and kill soldiers, because they have snipers and anti-tanks.

The Maute group, through its snipers and anti-tank units, still continues to be a threat to government forces, the report noted.

Still, the military, according to the same radio report, is not letting its guard down and continues to conduct airstrikes against the extremists. — Jessica Bartolome/MDM, GMA News
