At least 2 killed, 41 hurt in Leyte quake

Two were killed following the magnitude 6.5 earthquake that struck the island of Leyte on Thursday afternoon.

One fatality was reported in Kananga, Leyte, according to Mayor Rowena Codilla.

"Ngayon nagre-rescue na sila, may na-retrieve na kami na isang dead saka isang wounded. I don't know the age pero 'yung namatay is lalaki, tapos 'yung wounded is babae," said Kananga, Leyte Mayor Rowena Codilla in a radio dzBB interview.

"Actually wala pa talaga akong exact na count (ng casualties), naghihintay din kasi kami ng rescue from the province kasi kailangan namin ng mga equipment," she added.

In a separate "24 Oras" interview, Ormoc City Mayor Richard Gomez disclosed that there was also a fatality in his constituency.

Gomez added that about 40 persons were injured.

"Meron kaming reported na number of patients dito, mga about 40. 'Yung iba nadala na namin sa ospital, tinitreat sila. Karamihan dito mga na-shock, na-trauma tapos 'yung iba naman dinadala sa district hospital dito sa Ormoc," Gomez said.

"Minor injuries lang tapos 'yung iba naman siguro na-shock 'yung iba sa trauma sa earthquake. Although merong concerned fatality doon sa isang mountain barangay namin, natabunan ng landslide," Gomez added.

Gomez also took note that their three highways had cracks, but they are still passable.

Collapsed building

Meanwhile, the two-storey Queda commercial building in Kananga, Leyte collapsed as a result of the quake.

The building, according to Mayor Codilla, has a grocery, hardware and boutique.

Aftershocks expected, but no tsunamis

PHIVOLCS deputy director Bark Bautista told GMA News that people should brace for aftershocks, but tsunamis are not expected.

"Pag nasa lupa ang lindol, hindi usually nagkakaroon ng tsunami," he explained.

In an interview with "24 Oras," Bautista said they already recorded nine aftershocks.

Power interruption

The quake also triggered power outage in the province's capital of Tacloban City and in Ormoc City.

The quake struck 8 kilometers southwest of the town of Jaro at a depth of 2 kilometers beneath the island. It was felt at Intensity V in Tacloban City and Palo, Leyte, and even as far as Cebu City. — TJD, GMA News
