Suspected Abu Sayyaf member killed in Basilan clash – Wesmincom

A suspected Abu Sayyaf member was killed while four government troops were wounded following a clash in Basilan early Friday, the Armed Forces Western Mindanao Command said.

In a statement, the Westmincom said the encounter transpired at 6:45 a.m. between elements of the Army's 18th Infantry Battalion and Abu Sayyaf terrorists led by Nawapi Abdulsaid alias Khatan in Barangay Bohe Pahu in Ungkaya Pukan town.

The body of the slain Abu Sayyaf member was recovered by the operating troops.

Two high-powered firearms, shabu and other drug paraphernalia were also recovered from the encounter site, the statement said.

The statement quoted Col. Juvymax Uy, commander of the Joint Task Force Basilan, as saying: “The troops were conducting reconnaissance in response to the reported presence of Abu Sayyaf members in the area of engagement. Upon sensing the movement of the troops, the bandits initiated the armed confrontation.”

“The recovered shabu and drug paraphernalia are proof that these bandits are using drugs regularly,” he added.

The statement said the wounded soldiers were airlifted to Zamboanga City for treatment.

Pursuit operations have since been launched against the other Abu Sayyaf men. — RSJ/KVD, GMA News
